National Caregiving Strategy: Public Consultations – Social and community care

May 15, 2024

Social and community care services like home care, respite (i.e. appropriate care services without caregiver supervision) and caregiver support groups are challenging to access. Too often, eligibility criteria restrict access to services, or a shortage of qualified care providers creates long waitlists. There are a number of policy solutions that could improve this reality, including:

  • Financial supports for caregivers, including a refundable Canada Caregiver Credit that returns some money to your pocket through your tax return.
  • A new monthly Caregiver Benefit to fill a gap in loss of income or increased cost of living due to caregiving responsibilities and need for medical supplies (including out-of-pocket medical expenses, medication, etc.).
  • Targeted support programs to help address isolation and loneliness among caregivers, care providers, and care recipients.
  • Access to community-based programming to help veteran caregivers, military family caregivers and Canadian Forces caregivers Canadian Forces get the support they need close to home.

Join us for a consultation session on May 15, to explore caregiver interactions with social and community care and what policy innovations can transform these experiences for the better. Attendees will also have an opportunity to provide feedback and share their policy solutions

Registration for this webinar is required. If you cannot attend and would like to share your policy ideas, you can complete our engagement form.
