Poor health among workers and gaps in caregiving caused Canada’s economy to lose more than $100 billion in 2025, a report by Deloitte Canada estimated on Tuesday.

Canadian workers are being “sidelined by illness, poor mental health, or caregiving responsibilities,” said Michelle Theroux, national health leader at Deloitte Canada.

Canada’s caregivers are being financially squeezed as they try to balance having a career with taking care of loved ones who need them, a survey by the Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence said earlier this year.

Around six in 10 (59 per cent) said they are juggling their caregiving duties with their careers, while 36 per cent said caregiving had hampered their productivity and caused them to lose earnings.
