National Caregiving Strategy: Public Consultations – Healthcare

Canada needs a National Caregiving Strategy to meaningfully support all those who give care, including care providers in paid care roles. The Canadian Centre for Caregiving Excellence (CCCE) needs your voice to create a strategy that reflects the experiences and policy ideas of caregivers and care providers and people who access care across Canada.

Healthcare

Caregivers and care providers face many barriers when supporting people in healthcare settings or accessing services intended to support them.  There are a number of policy solutions that could improve this reality, including :

  • Adoption of federal legislation that recognizes the critical role that caregivers and care providers play in our healthcare systems and the creation a National Caregiving Advisory Council so that the caregiver voice is embedded throughout the government.
  • Make caregiving a priority in future federal healthcare funding agreements with provinces. This would guarantee that caregiver-specific services and support are funded by the federal government.
  • Access to training for clinical caregiving tasks (like administering medication and mobility assistance) so that caregivers feel equipped and confident
  • Make it less expensive to be a caregiver by increasing the share of your medical and care expenses that can be claimed on your taxes.
  • Fund dedicated access to appropriate mental health support for caregivers and care providers to decrease burnout and support caregiver wellness and resilience.

Join us for a consultation session on May 8, to explore caregiver interactions in the healthcare system, and what policy innovations can transform these experiences for the better. Attendees will also have an opportunity to provide feedback and share their policy solutions.

Registration for this webinar is required. If you cannot attend and would like to share your policy ideas, you can complete our engagement form.
